Fairy tales set bad examples for kids?
Sometimes they show cartoon characters still alive inside an animal’s stomach after they’ve been eaten whole by an animal. Will kids start to carry pocket knives in case they need to bust out of a wolf’s belly?
On the other hand, shouldn’t they show the real way that animals tear flesh and leave the bones instead of erroneously showing them eating people whole? This may give kids the wrong impression that they have a second chance if they were eaten, so they would try to get eaten on purpose.
For thousands of years parents have told their kids fairytales. Mythic themes that are practically universal, yet specfic to sociatial variants. The biblical prophet Jonah, in the belly of the whale for three days, an OT story in the book of Jonah and vouched for by Jesus Christ in the book of Matthew as he foretold the Son of man spending three days in the heart of the earth. Both stories of death and resurrection. Belly of the wolf, whale, earth or dragon the hero has to come to terms with and overcome the powers of nature. Reconnecting us with our own humanity, realigning our center, which is constantly under pressure of the conscious mind and ego. We don’t need to reconstruct the tales that explain who we are but only to understand them and share that understanding. Modern media cannot replace mom or dad sharing these stories in a way our kids will benefit from their telling.
