Many people have heard about bayberry candles and the stories behind them. Candles without a doubt have a very interesting past and bayberry is no exception. It has been known that for the longest time animal fat and tallow candles were the most widely used until bayberry wax came along. Even today, bayberry candles can hold their own with the popular beeswax candles that many people use today. Even though these candles are not as big as they once were, they still have a large following. Let us look at some more history of the bayberry candle and how it is used today.

Early colonists use to burn animal fat candles and the smell was something that was not real inviting and they needed something else. Bayberry wax is extracted from berries that grow on a shrub in North America and Canada and thus bayberry candles were born. Even today bayberry candles are extremely popular just like they were many years ago when first discovered by colonists who were looking for another alternative to animal fat candles. Many different uses and legends are associated with this candle so let us look at some of those.

Bayberry candles are used all year long, but Christmas is a time when they see some of the greatest use. These candles are burnt on Christmas Eve and legend has it that if you do your coming years will be prosperous and bad luck will be driven away. New Years Eve is also another time these candles see a lot of use as people want to bless the coming year. There are many different uses for bayberry candles and in the end, it really is limitless. It all depends on each individual. The one area where the bayberry candle excels is filling a room with the sweet smell of berry. Many times, we need to get rid of a certain smell and one of the fastest ways is with a sweet smelling bayberry candle.

Today’s bayberry candles are a little different then it is predecessors many years ago. Many times you will find that these candles will have other ingredients added that may not have been in use many years ago. This does not take away from the value or popularity of these candles in today’s marketplace. Many people will tell you nothing can replace the smell of a bayberry candle or the myth of what they can do. If you have never tried bayberry candles, you do not know what you are missing.
